Straw‑Clay Eco Home

Project Details:

The Straw‑Clay Eco Home in Deerfield, MA is a shining example of how thoughtful design and natural materials can create a home that is both beautiful and sustainable. Completed in 2023, this net‑zero energy home was designed with a focus on performance, comfort, and craftsmanship — blending traditional building techniques with modern energy efficiency.

Constructed using locally sourced, bio‑based materials, the home’s structure features straw insulation from a neighboring farm and earthen plaster walls, providing exceptional thermal mass and indoor air quality. Nearly 70% of the lumber was milled directly on site, minimizing waste and ensuring a strong connection to the land.

The design incorporates passive solar heating and cooling, optimizing natural light and warmth year‑round, while a VOC‑free interior ensures a healthy, breathable living environment. Sustainable details like recycled foam foundation insulation, metal roofing, slate tile, and Goshen stone bring both durability and timeless appeal to the home’s aesthetic.

Finished with natural oils and finishes, every element reflects Yeoman Design Build’s commitment to sustainability, craftsmanship, and creating spaces that nurture both people and the planet.
